The ARM1136™ processors feature the ARMv6 instruction set with media extensions, Thumb® code compression technology, and an optional floating-point coprocessor. The ARM1136 is a mature core that is widely deployed as an applications processor in mobile and consumer applications.

The ARM1136 is software compatible with earlier ARM cores, and with the ARM and Thumb instructions from the latest ARM Cortex-A series processors. ARM1136 does not support Neon or Thumb-2 instructions from the Cortex-A series. Recommended for new applications processor and SoC designs, the Cortex-A5 processor delivers higher performance at lower power in less area than the ARM1136 or ARM1176..


Shown below is a selection of standard benchmarks, indicating the performance improvement when moving from an ARM926EJ-S™ to an ARM1136J-S™ processor. Similar performance gains over ARM9™ family cores are achieved with ARM1176™ and ARM11MPCore™ processors, and in cases where memory performance is critical even higher performance is achieved relative to ARM9 family processors.

Cortex Alternative

The Cortex™-A5 processor is a related follow-on product to the ARM1136 and ARM1176. The Cortex-A5 processor offers similar speed to ARM11™ processors, at lower power and smaller die area, with the ARMv7 benefits of NEON™, and TrustZone®, as well as an advanced AMBA® AXI™ bus. Cutting edge new SoC designs for are starting now based on the ARM Cortex-A5 processor, however some SoC designs are still starting with ARM1136 processor where cost, minimal risk, migration from existing AMBA AHB-bus designs, and product maturity are important considerations.
