The ARM9E processor family enables single processor solutions for microcontrollerDSP and Java applications, offering savings in chip area and complexity, power consumption, and time-to-market. The ARM9E family of products is DSP-enhanced 32-bit RISC processors, well suited for applications requiring a mix of DSP and microcontroller performance.

TI Davinci Leopard Board

The Leopard Board is a full featured, ultra low cost, small form factor, high performance digital media SoC development system, which includes a TMS320DM355 Processor board and a 5 MP VGA camera board to provide VGA resolution video capture. The board also provides stereo audio, LCD/DVI, USB 2.0, 10/100 Ethernet, JTAG, and serial interfaces.

Soon cars, medical devices and even toys will be streaming control and data to each other and the world. The number of these devices will overwhelm the number of computers. Already over 1.5 billion Java enabled cell phones communicate with each other on a regular basis. We foresee a day when trillions of such devices form and internet of things.

Project Sun SPOT encourages programmers who never before worked with embedded devices to think beyond the keyboard, mouse and screen and write programs that interact with each other, the environment and their users in completely new ways. A Java programmer can use standard Java development tools such as NetBeans to write code.

Sun SPOTs are much more than just an embedded microprocessor that runs Java. We have put together a set of technologies that we hope will enable the internet of things.


ARM/Keil Starter Kits

Snapper 9260 is a mid-performance module based on an ARM9E core at an ultra-low price. For products constrained by size and unit cost, Snapper 9260 is an ideal choice and is one of the smallest modules currently available. It is based the Atmel AT91SAM9260 microcontroller, contains 64MB of SDRAM, and 1GB NAND flash.

RealView Platform Baseboard for ARM926EJ-S

The ARM RealView Hardware Platforms, designed for quick and efficient prototyping and development, are easy enough to be used in both graduate and undergraduate programs.

The RealView Versatile Platform Baseboard for ARM926EJ-S  is designed specifically for ASIC emulation and prototyping. It is an ideal development board for the academic projects, graduate coursework or senior theses using the ARM926EJ-S. The RealView Versatile Platform Baseboard provides an AMBA multi-layer AHB prototyping environment. At the heart of the board is a highly integrated development chip based on the ARM926EJ-S platform architecture. External bus interfaces on the development chip, which enable bus layers inside the chip to be routed off-chip, provide access to the multiple internal bus layers of the platform architecture for expansion.

Charmed Labs is offering a powerful robotics platform solution targeted for academic projects. It incorporates a 200 MHz ARM9 processor with MMU and hardware floating point unit, along with 32 MBytes of SDRAM, 8 MBytes of flash, Xilinx Spartan 3E FPGA, Linux 2.6 installed, WiFi support, webcam video input, as well as an excellent I/O feature-set for robotics and mechatronics applications.

Other 3rd-party Platform Providers

ARM is aware of many other educational platforms available from third parties, and while we cannot endorse or recommend any particular products, we will pass along information as it becomes available. Please note that none of the products offered through these companies are available from ARM, and we make no claim as to their availability or price.


A separate, compatible debug adapter is sometimes needed for development with ARM-based platforms. However, more ARM-based platforms are being made available with integrated, on-board debugging capabilities eliminating the need for such external hardware.

Some platforms have real-time data access and instruction trace capability for systems that that must be debugged in real-time without stopping the system and a physical trace interface will likely be needed for this purpose. 

These interfaces can be purchased directly from ARM (an ARM company), or through a variety of ARM partners and distributors.

Low-cost debug adapters are also available for purchase from third-party companies such as Olimex, as well as a variety of others. 

Be sure to check the compatibility between your boards, software tools, and debug adapter.
