What is Augmented Reality (AR)?
Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that enhances the user’s view of the real world by overlaying what the user sees with computer-generated information. The technology is prevalent in smartphone AR applications that require the user to use their camera phone. By taking the image from the camera and processing in real time, the application delivers contextual information, like navigation support or gaming and social experiences that are still rooted in the real world, for instance, the augmented environments that are generated through the Snapchat lenses. Increasingly, focus is growing on delivering a more holistic AR experience through wearable smart glasses. However, AR is also being used to support workers in enterprise and industrial applications through AR head-mounted display devices, including the Microsoft HoloLens 2.
Why is Augmented Reality Important?
While augmented reality (AR) is an increasingly important component of online gaming and social media, a growing number of AR applications are being adopted in industries such as education, healthcare, and retail. One leading retailer disclosed that product pages with AR experiences led to a 94% higher conversion rate when compared to traditional listings. Arm’s CPU and GPU technologies provide the power and efficiency requirements for next-gen AR devices, such as their increasingly complex features and capabilities, all within a light and comfortable wearable form factor.
