MEDIA ALERT: Keil MDK-ARM extends support for new Infineon XMC4000 microcontroller family used in industrial applications

February 20, 2012

What:
ARM today announced Keil™ MDK-ARM™ support for the new XMC4000 microcontroller family of Infineon Technologies that is based on the ARM® Cortex™-M4 processor and designed for use in industrial applications. This is an important evolutionary step for developers who have previously used Keil tools to develop products based on the successful C166 and XC800 microcontrollers of Infineon. Support features include the Cortex-M4 DSP capabilities and Floating-Point Unit (FPU), set-up files and device-specific views.

Keil MDK-ARM connects, via ULINK Debug Adapters, to the XMC4000 Evaluation Boards from Infineon and Hitex. The ULINKpro adapter provides extended debug capabilities along with streaming trace that enables users to analyze real-time program behavior, code coverage and software performance analysis for virtually unlimited periods of time.

MDK-ARM is a complete C/C++ software development environment for ARM processor-based microcontroller applications. It is easy to learn and use, yet powerful enough for the most demanding embedded applications. The MDK-ARM Professional edition includes a rich set of middleware components for communication peripherals, memory cards and graphic displays.

 Why:
“Keil tool chains are already broadly adopted by users of the C166 and XC800 microcontrollers of Infineon. Keil MDK-ARM provides an easy to use software development kit that includes the highly efficient ARM compiler,” said Dr. Stephan Zizala, Senior Director Industrial and Multimarket Microcontrollers, Infineon Technologies. “The Infineon XMC4000 family based on the Cortex-M4 processor contains flexible and real-time optimized peripherals. With extended support from Keil development tools, customers can now work seamlessly with the Infineon microcontroller families C166, XC800 and XMC4000.”

“Keil has a long history of supporting Infineon microcontroller families and is providing industry leading tools for XC800 and XC166/XC2000 microcontrollers. The new Infineon XMC4000 family is a natural upgrade path for our users,” said Reinhard Keil, Director of MCU Tools, ARM. “The peripheral features of the first product generation XMC4000 include Ethernet, USB 2.0 full-speed OTG, CAN, and SD/MMC interface, which makes these devices an ideal platform for the middleware provided with MDK-ARM Professional.”

“Keil and Hitex have supported Infineon microcontrollers for a number of years, and the new XMC4000 family, based on the Cortex-M4 processor, extends our mutual user base,” said Frank Grobe, Managing Director, Hitex. “Hitex has extensive experience in safety-critical applications and complements the MDK-ARM development suite with evaluation boards, sample code, and extensive product training.”
